Mission

NC DPI Exceptional Children Department Mission

The mission of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Exceptional Children's Division (NCDPI EC Division) makes a commitment to “ensure that students with disabilities develop intellectually, physically, emotionally, and vocationally through the provision of an appropriate individualized education program in the least restrictive environment.”

The Anson County Schools Exceptional Children's Program provides specially designed instruction and programming designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities according to federal and state mandates of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

Welcome

Welcome to Anson County Schools!

If you are new to Anson County Schools and have questions about special education, please visit our Exceptional Children (EC) webpage or contact the Exceptional Children Office at 704-694-4417 ext 1700.

In order to make your student’s transition into Anson County Schools go smoothly, it is very important to provide your student’s new school copies of the following information during registration:

• Most recent psychoeducational report, eligibility, evaluation and/or reevaluation report;

• Current individualized education program (IEP); and

• Contact information for your student’s previous school and school district.

These items will support a successful transition between your student’s old and new school and will ensure that appropriate services and supports are made available.

What to Expect

For out of state students:

Once you have shared your student’s special education records, school staff will invite you to a meeting to discuss comparable services, or services similar to or the same as, provided on your student’s most recent IEP. During the meeting, school staff will also describe the initial eligibility process that occurs when students move from out of state and the timeline in which an initial eligibility will occur.

For in state students but new to Anson County Schools:

School staff will begin implementing your student’s current IEP immediately. An invitation to review and revise your student’s IEP may be scheduled. The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss your student’s transition to a new school and to determine if any adjustments to the services and supports currently being provided are needed.

Public Notice of Destruction of Records

Anson County Schools (ACS) Office of Exceptional Children (EC) is hereby notifying the public of the intent to destroy confidential special education records. It is important to note the evaluation and placement records may be needed by the student or parent for social security benefits or other purposes.

Records used to identify and accommodate children with disabilities who are eligible for specially differentiated instruction under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) will be destroyed five (5) years from the date the student is no longer receiving specially differentiated instruction unless destruction is requested at an earlier time.

To request records contact the EC Office at 320 Camden Road, Wadesboro, NC 28170 or 704-694-4417.  Picture identification is required before records will be released to anyone. The person receiving the records will be asked to sign a form documenting receipt of the records.

The school system will maintain a permanent record of the student’s name, address, phone number, his/her grades, attendance records, classes attended, grade level completed, and year completed without time limitation.
